Tide Pool Mermaid
A beautiful serene mermaid lounges by tide pools, day dreaming of love lost or found. She is Raku fired. Raku is a live ceramic firing process where pieces are fired in a kiln very quickly to about 2000°F then removed with tongues and fire retardant gear while still molten hot, then placed in a metal bin with newspaper to continue burning. It is a brutal and sometimes fatal firing process for ceramics, but this mermaid survived and her glaze colors are stunning. She was thrown on a wheel in several pieces and then hand altered and carved. She is mounted on a maple slab with ocean blue pigmented epoxy to create the tide pool. The stones and shells come from my island adventures across the globe. She is draped with handmade kelp. Approximate dimensions: L 27” x W 10.5” x H 9”
